Environmental Science
New research is showing some troubling information about animals on the receiving end of industrial agriculture’s big GMO experiment.
1. How is it connected to social justice?
The issue of animal testing is connected to social justice because is it an injustice that exists with animals. Just because animals don’t have a voice, doesn’t justify the testing on animals. Animals are part of society. We rely on animals to be our companions, and we even use them for therapies. Often times they are the eyes to people with disabilities. It is unfair that we use these animals for our benefits but forget about them when they need us. |
2) How is it connected to Environmental Science?
“A GMO, genetically modified organism, is the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal. The foreign genes may come from bacteria, viruses, insects, animals or even humans. Because this involves the transfer of genes, GMOs are also known as "transgenic" organisms.” GMOs are also often times tested on animals. In a study testing Monsanto's GMO seeds, animals were feed genetically modified corn and soy As a result, calves were born too weak to walk, with enlarged joints and limb deformities. Piglets experience rapidly deteriorating health, a “failure to thrive” so severe that they started breaking down their own tissues and organs to survive. Many animals suffered from weak, brittle bones that easily fracture. Dairy cows developed mastitis, a painful udder infection. Beef cattle develop liver abscesses and an excruciating condition referred to as “twisted gut.” |
