Historical Context
Testing on animals in the name of science is not a new method. The early Greek, Arabs and Roman people would often conduct animal experiments in order to understand anatomy, physiology, pathology and pharmacology. They would do so in order to get a better idea of how the body worked and reacted to chemicals.
