Global Context
It is estimated that more than 115 million animals worldwide are used in laboratory experiments every year. There exist companies all around the world that test their products on animals. The products being tested can vary from prescribed drugs, cosmetics, fragrances, home cleaning materials, etc. The reason that a variety of companies use animals to test in the first place is for the safety of the human health. The products being tested on animals is so that scientist will see the negative side effects on animals of the products, and they can later conclude if it will affect humans in any way. Products will usually be tested “in vitro using tissues and isolated organs, but legally and ethically it must also be tested in a suitable animal model before clinical trials in humans can take place” (Why Animals are Used).
A company that is well known all around the world, and that tests its products on animals is Johnson & Johnson. Johnson & Johnson is a company that owns other smaller companies- products such as Band-Aid, Tylenol medications, Neutrogena skin products, Clean and Clear products, Acuvue contact lenses, etc. The company itself lets the consumer know that they test some of their products on animals. On their website it states, “The use of animals in the development of our products is sometimes required to ensure products are safe and effective. In fact, alternatives to animal testing techniques, commonly called in vitro techniques, do not generate all of the pre-clinical data required by government agencies to bring new products to market… especially true for certain products from our medical devices businesses, as proper training of the health professionals who will use them is critical to patient safety and the currently available non-animal methods for training do not meet the necessarily high standards to ensure safe.” So even though they do test on animals, they pride themselves by stating that they only do so for pharmaceutical products.
