Jacky's Philosophy of Social Justice
What is Social Justice?
From my personal point of view, people have different meanings for social justice. At first I had no idea what social justice meant. I thought “social justice” had to do with the law and a step towards becoming a lawyer, which I still remember is what I talked about in my application essay for Social Justice High School. But after my four years of attending Social Justice High School, I have a whole different meaning towards social justice. To me, social justice means to fight for what you believe is right. It means that you stand up for your beliefs of what is right and what is wrong, and you take it upon yourself to actually do something about that issue. Instead of being a bystander, you take action and fight for your beliefs.
What obstacles do we face while struggling to achieve social justice?
Social Justice is clearly something that is not easily obtained because of the many injustices that still exist to this day. I believe social justice is not easily obtained because we are often not heard. First off, there are not that many people willing to actually speak up for what they believe in, and then the people that do speak up are often not heard. I also think that another struggle we face is neglect. For the people that do speak up, they will either not be heard or will be promised a deal and then pushed aside. The people in power will often say what they need to say in order to get people of their back.
What is your vision for struggle?
Since social justice is challenging enough to obtain, people have been coming together to create multiple ways to achieve their social justice. People all over the world have been taking part in marches, sit-ins, protest, etc. just to get their point across and have a result to their issue. A more recent example is how on April 28, 2015, people in the city of Chicago went and protested for the police brutality cases that have happened in Baltimore. This shows how even though an issue arose in a whole different city, people in Chicago are standing up and fighting for what they believe is right. This also shows that when people stick together and fight for the same issue, people in groups will get things done.
What is your role in the struggle?
Truth to be told, I don’t really consider myself someone that speaks up. I am the type of person that has her opinion on every issue, but I will usually not say anything. I am not proud to say that I have always been a bystander. But I plan on changing that through this project. I plan and hope that I will work on bringing awareness to the issue that I have chosen.
How is your issue a social justice issue?
My issue is medical testing on animals. I believe this is a social justice issue because of the unethical factor to the whole issue. Because animals don’t have a voice, some people unappreciated those animals. This is a social justice issue because we seek a fair treatment for all these animals. Those animals being tested on need someone to speak up for them and fight for their equal treatment.
